WHAT IS SPIRAL DYNAMICS?

Developing from the original work of the late Dr. Clare W. Graves, Spiral Dynamics was originally called “The double helix model of emergent bio-psycho-social systems”. Actually a study of the evolution of the human ego, Spiral Dynamics is a way to view complex values systems and beliefs, both in organisations and individual lives. Dr Don Beck and Dr Christopher Cowan spent years of research developing the original work of Clare Graves to its present sophisticated format. The incredible power of this model lies in the immense scope offered by its predicative capability – from global trends to complex organisational shifts to the probability of individual behaviour in a given situation. The Spiral Dynamics framework offers a fresh, powerful, and holistic approach to problem solving, change, and transformations.

Currently the subject of a PhD being completed by John Cook of 5 Deep Ltd through the auspices of Sheffield Hallam University (UK), Spiral Dynamics describes the effects of life conditions on our idea sets, mind and value sets (called memes). It discusses how these memes replicate and communicate themselves through the minds of people and cultures. This model offers us a description of the different world views and values sets held by different people and it also offers us a way of determining who holds which world view – i.e. the answer to the question “How do you know?” and how to deal with each world view for maximum effectiveness in people management.

A more user friendly way of thinking about this complex system is to think of its value in terms of 'social DNA'. Blending the understanding of how our life conditions affect us with the study of how the idea, mind and value sets communicate themselves through the minds of people and cultures. Best understood as the description and understanding of the different world views held by different people – and indeed by ourselves in different contexts – this powerful human science makes it easier to understand and relate to others, enabling us to communicate in their style and with their preferences. It is equally applicable to individuals, organisations and entire cultures.

It must be stated here that Spiral Dynamics DOES NOT form any part of the study or teaching of NLP. Leadervision incorporates the study of Spiral Dynamics into its public and corporate orientated short courses and does so to round out the teachings of NLP, to offer a surprisingly effective and speedy form of behavioural modelling and communication within an organisation and to set the framework for an ecological application of NLP techniques to business, organisations and cultures.

The particular and specific integration of Neuro-Linguistic Programming with Spiral Dynamics has been copyrighted by Roger Deaner as Intuition Technology® and is taught in this integrated way by Roger in the programs High Performance Selling, Training Dynamics and Integral Leadership and in programs developed specifically for certain organisations for their in-house training.
